Driving across the desert last year, I was inspired by the natural formation of the net-like structure of the tumbleweeds that blew past me on the highway. I have worked with crochet to create forms for a while but had problems creating a firm core. The solution was provided by a monumental installation over 3 x 4 metres in the new Hilton South Wharf in Melbourne, constructed completely from metal scourers. It is amazing. Metal scourers are an interesting, versatile and inexpensive material to incorporate with traditional methods.
